Pastor's Note from Father Tony: Archdiocese Bankruptcy Update
The Archdiocese of San Francisco filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, August 21st.
On that date Archbishop Cordileone and 2 Archdiocesan lawyers met with the priests of the Archdiocese to update us on the situation. They stated that there were 537 claims against the Archdiocese. The majority of these are legacy claims from decades ago. The decision was made to handle these claims collectively rather than separately so there can be an even distribution of money among the claims. The bankruptcy court will eventually work out this process through a mediator.
The Archbishop reiterated that the money for these claims will come from the Archdiocese Corporate Sole arm and that parishes, schools and the AAA should not be affected. He reassured us that parishes and schools can proceed normally.
Finally, as a thoughtful parishioner wrote me and which is easy to forget as the Archdiocese goes through this difficult legal maneuverings, there is the real and traumatic pain of the survivors of clergy abuse. Let us remember them and pray for them for their continued healing from these unconscionable incidents perpetrated by clergy.
